250km – 3 days / 2 night

  • Start: Swakopmund
  • Finish: Swakopmund

The Swakop River, along with its main tributary Khan, is one of the largest temporary water-bearing rivers in the dry western part of Namibia. Join us as we explore the Swakop River Canyon, one of Namibia’s hidden gems. Every bit as picturesque as Namibia’s larger Fish River Canyon, the drive through this canyon is simply breath-taking and will transport you to another world.

Popularly referred to as the “Moon Valley”, the Swakop River Valley boasts glorious lunar landscapes formed over 460 million years ago. Marvel at 1 500-year-old Welwitschias, lithops, hoodias and mist-gathering lichens. The trip also includes a stop-over at Goanikontes Oasis. The remnants of a 19th century German Schutztruppe garrison can be found here. Today this site features a modern-day resort and campsite, ideal for a drinks stop-over.

Higher up-stream we’ll enter the Khan River, a geological treasure trove set amidst harsh rocky landscapes carved deep into the Namib desert plains. Step back in time as we visit the remnants of an old copper mining town that closed down in 1918.

Both nights we’ll enjoy the magic of sleeping out under the stars in this desert wonderland.
