240km – day trip

  • Start: Henties Bay
  • Finish: Henties Bay

One of Damaraland’s most awe-inspiring natural attractions is the highly mysterious-looking Messum Crater, popular for its utter desolation and breath-taking desert views. Created by a collapsed volcano 130 million years ago, the crater consists of a wide flat basin measuring more than 20km in diameter surrounded by a ring-shaped range of hills.

This day trip is ideal to experience the overwhelming tranquillity of the Namib Desert and offers spectacular viewpoints and interesting rock formations. Other natural wonders that we will encounter along the way are vast plains of lichen fields and enormous Welwitschia mirabilis plants.

A visit to the historical site called “Bakkrans” (overhanging cliff) offers the opportunity to see ancient rock art from a magical vantage point that overlooks the endless desert vistas.
